Malcolm Concept

State your (real) name.
· Malcolm Isaiah Dowthard

When did first 'become' an artist .
[ do you recall the day , you said -- ' this is what i wanna do , make music '?]
· Although I have been producing music since I was 15 going into the eleventh grade, I decided to become an artist after leaving Noitavoni Records and moving to Washington D.C to complete a semester abroad at another college. Prior to my switch to American University in D.C I attended Loyola University New Orleans.

Where, Why and How did you come up with your stage name?
· I named myself. In choosing a name, I sought a name/tittle that embodied a consensus of my productions. If anything, I would like to be recognized for my concepts; from subject matter though instrumental arrangement and choice.

Are you a member of a music organization (label) , if so name?
· Indeed. I am a member of Made iN Space Productions and Publishing, which is an element of a Secret Music Group composed of other affiliate organizations.

Who are your musical influences?
· In no particular order, the following are my musical influences. . . . all other good music, life, arbitrary things i fathom, love, hate, the cosmos, astronomy, controversy, history, the future yet to come, my dreams, family, friends.

Who are your favorite groups? cd ? ( list 3 a piece please)
· Jay-Z - "The Blueprint III" , Kanye WesT - "The Graduation", Pharell - "Seeing Sounds"
I take it your write your own music , but what gives you the inspiration ?
· The moment at hand is primarily my inspiration. Often, already complete visions sprout into my head then I record them into my phones notepad if I am unable to manifest them on the spot.

What’s more intriguing and creative writing lyrics or the actual singing creating melodies?
· Indeed by 1% I would say that the creating of the melodies/beats is the most intriguing element of the creative process of manifesting a song.

What image do you think your music conveys ?
· I think my songs convey vivid images of the vocal lyrics and the emotional image of the instrument arrangement.

What do you want from your fans ?
· I want participation and love from my fans. I create in hopes others will empathize with my production. Most people have a song they love working out to, love listening to when they get off work, love playing at weddings, love playing at the club, love playing when life puts them in a bad mood. I hope my song completes a void. I hope my creations to deliver happiness and fulfillment to a given occasion. If 96% of Earth did not like my music, I would only be concerned with the 4% who did. And I would appreciate them. .

What are your immediate music career goals?
· My immediate career goals are to advance my art and promote my art, and expand and consolidate my network. Through these things others come into fruition.

What has been your biggest challenge has a unsigned artist?
· Myself. I am vice president of the record label I am signed to. Other than the other executives, there is no one else I report to.

What do you want to accomplish with your music this year (2010) ?
· I plan promote content from my latest project, “FOREVER and BEYOND mixtape” which released November 10th 2009. In the mean time I am also working on my next mixtape, “Welcome to FuturE” which will be a collision of Trance Electronic Energy and Hip Hop Energy. Later in 2010 look to hear my Hip Hop project “*The KUSH 2010*”.

Out of all the songs you have recorded , what is your favorite ? , what is your least favorite?
· My Favorite Song Recorded thus far is Space For A While , because it is the most abstract but concrete thing I have architected thus far.
· My least favorite is the first song and beat I ever created simply because they are the oldest and youngest representations of my creative capabilities.

Could you briefly describe your music- making process .
· Create a brand new beat (or) Vibe to an already created beat. Write or Freestyle Vocals/Record Them. Mix & Master the product. Then vwala!

Do you have any upcoming shows ?
· Indeed, I have a listening party with Brother Hood ENT in Los Angeles, January 19th.
· Others to be announced. . . . .

· I am shooting a music video for my song “Im So TurnT” produced by J Hawk, details also to be announced.
How can fans to be gain access to your music ?

those CHOSEN , a name that fits them pretty well , I've ran across a new era trio & I had to show them OFF . ( lol ) , i actually found this group on twitter [ their page RT'd my #supportLA tweet ] & from there i became a fan . Any would classify them has the " The NEW DMC...no chain...no adidas " listen up for yourself , and let me know what you think !

kay, State your (real) name: Lyndon "Foreshadow" Marshall, McKinley
"Japetto" Brown II and Sean "KornBread" Kershaw

kay, when did first "become" an artist .
[ do you recall the day , you said -- ' this is what i wanna do , make music '?]

Foreshadow: Always enjoyed creative things like writing, music, poetry
and film since I was young. My step-father who is 10 yrs younger than
my mom, introduced me to hip-hop like some big "brother-little
brother" type thing.

Kornbread: Ever since I was able to remember when I was a little boy,
I have been an avid fan of music. I can remember watching my mother
clean the house while listening to Prince or Sade on full blast and I
would grab the broom from her and pretend it was a microphone and just
start singing away.

Japetto: I just wanted to do it when I saw my friends and family being
creative by dancing or rapping around the way when I was growing up.

Where, Why and How did you come up with your stage name?

Foreshadow: I thought of the name myself. Basically, if anyone is
familiar with literature, a foreshadow in the story refers to
something down the line in the story. I attempt to project that
through my lyrics---give people something down the line to say, "I get
what he was talking about, it all makes sense".

Kornbread: Kornbread has always been my nickname because of my
"yellow" complexion

Japetto: I use to dance and that name was given to my from older b-boy
homies and friends, they gave me the name.

kay, Are you a member of a music organization (label) , if so name?
Those Chosen inked an indedepent deal with a label in New York called
Savannah Boogie Music and Song to release our latest project, an ep,
called "5IVE".

kay, who are your musical influences?

Foreshadow: James Brown, OutKast, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy
Kornbread: Ice Cube, Prince, El DeBarge, NWA, De La Soul
Japetto: Micheal Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde

who are your favorite groups? cd ? ( list 3 a piece please)

Foreshadow: OutKast (ATLiens - album), A Tribe Called Quest (Midnight
Mauraders - album), Public Enemy (Fear of A Black Planet - album)

Kornbread: Outkast: (Aquemeni - album), GoodieMob (Soul Food - album),
The Roots (Illadelphia Halflife - album)

Japetto: A Tribe Called Quest (Midnight Maurders - album), The Roots
(Illadelphia Halflife - album) De La Soul (Stakes is High - album)

kay, I take it you write your own music, but what gives you the inspiration ?

Foreshadow: "As long as an artist is observant and lives to the
fullest (good & bad), then life, itself, will inspire you to create
something and express it to the world"

Kornbread: "Today, my inspiration comes absolutely at random. I can
get sparked from colors, sounds, smells, music. There isn't anything
specific that inspires me today, but when it comes I embrace it".

Japetto: "The Creator, and life's ups and down, it's good and bad times"

kay, whats more intriguing and creative - writing lyrics or the actual
singing creating melodies?

Foreshadow: "I'm growing to appreciate the way to say what I'm writing
just as much when I'm penning something I think is powerful - delivery
of your rhyme and melody of it counts alot".

Kornbread: I feel the most gratification from creating melodies and
watching the vision of certain songs come to life. As a "rapper", I
rap, so that's second nature sort to speak.

Japetto: Writing the lyrics is more intriguing to me

kay, what image do you think your music conveys ?

Underlying message/truth-telling (substance) yet entertaining at the
same time. We speak to the listener from all angles - street-wise,
socially, and spiritually.

kay, what do you want from your fans ?

LOYALTY, lol, naw seriously....to enjoy our music and grow with us in
our journey as artists

kay, what are your immediate music career goals?

Release "5IVE", our latest project in early 2010 and tour with the record

kay, what has been your biggest challenge has a unsigned artist?

There are alot of challenges that an artist deals with whether
unsigned, indepedent or major. The main thing is not to allow
challenges to overwhelm you, but allow them to be opportunities to
evolve into a better artist, person, businessman or whatever you are
supposed to become from that challenge.

kay, what do you want to accomplish with your music this year (2010) ?

Too many to name...release "5IVE", tour, collaborate with artists we
respect in terms of their work and garner that major deal with a
company that wants to see THOSE CHOSEN's vision span the globe 10x
over - ooooohweee.

kay, out of all the songs you have recorded , what is your favorite ? ,
what is your least favorite?

Foreshadow: "I like all our joints, but I'm biased..."Soundclash" off
of our new ep, "5IVE" and "All in All" from "Reign Food" are up there
in my favorites for right now

Japetto: "All in All" off of our "Reign Food" album

kay, could you briefly describe your music- making process.

FASHION ! FASHION ! FASHION ! FASHION ! FASHION ! FASHION ! FASHION !

Question by kay: Tell me a little about yourself , where are you from ? whats your
general professional and non- professional interests?

E Burns: I could tell you plenty about me but I am not the only one who is
apart of this brand. I am just 1/4th of a group of 4 young men who
were born in raised in Los Angeles Ca. Speaking on behalf of the brand
our general professional interest is street-wear culture and creating
the ideal brand to represent our prospective on street-wear and our non
- professional interest includes cars, photography, art etc.

Question by kay: Do you consider yourself an artist?

E Burns: Yes we all consider ourselves artist in one way or another. The one
thing that we possess that is as important, if not more important than
creativity is the ability to be innovative. It is one thing to think
of something creative, it’s another thing to actually do it.

Question by kay: What does fashion mean to you?

E Burns: To our brand fashion is the ability to absorb things in your
surroundings and become inspired by them, both negative and positive.
Jim Jarmusch once wrote,

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with
inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films,
music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random
conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees clouds,
bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only the things to steal
from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and
theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is
non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery-celebrate it
if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard
said: “It’s not where your take things from-it’s where you them to.”

Question by kay: How would you define your city's fashion?

E Burns: Our City's fashion game is pretty dope I mean in every city u get
those who have dope shit but don't know how to put it together, those
who still wear the clothes 4 sizes too big, those who have fashion but
no style, and those who just make it by. But then there are those who
surpass the standards and are on their fashion game everyday. So I
think our city can hold it’s own.

Question by kay: When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?

E Burns: For me it’s been since elementary. As a kid my bro and myself always
had new clothes new shoes name brand this name brand that. And I knew
I wanted to one day be one of the brands I was always laced in. So
when it was finally time for to support my habit of loving fashion I
did what had to. When I graduated high school myself and the rest of
the crew decided to start our own line.

Question by kay: What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?

E Burns: The first article of clothing we ever designed was some high quality
heat transferred tee's. We took them into shops and got ripped on for
using heat transfers lol.

Question by kay: What does YOUR clothing line stand for?

E Burns: Our Model is “Defy the Conventional and go against the Grain”. Our
Brand was created to simply bring a variety of different perspectives
to the culture of street-wear. Throughout our creative process we try
to perceive things from both the buyers and sellers perspective. We
try to create things that are different and new yet relatable and
familiar. We exclusively produce ideas that we truly value.

Question by kay: How did you come up with the name for your clothing line ?

E Burns: To make a really long story short a friend more or less called the
group of us “Prep Jerks” because it best described who we are. Prep
because of the way we dress and Jerks because we still hold the
attitude needed to aggressively contend in a world that is not always
forgiving. And that’s how our brand acquired the name Prep Jerks.
How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?
It honestly depends on how detailed or extensive the piece is. We
typically spend days and even weeks working on pieces. We believe that
spending time nitpicking an idea is the best way to perfect and
balance the end product.

Question by kay: Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a
piece of clothing.

E Burns: Typically it’s starts with the music blaring, and mind full of ideas
needing to be illustrated or captured in a way that they can relate to
everyone. From there Photoshop and Illustrator are opened and the
process beings.

Question by kay: Where can readers buy your clothes?

E Burns: As of now readers can buy are clothes at PREPJERKS and
Backside in Glendale,Ca

I emailed stokes the other night , letting him know that I'd love to do a piece on him . . if you note , a photo of him was ' Photo Of The Day ' taken by taylorgotbeats just the other day. .

kAy: When did your career start ?
st0kes ; -i'd say my decision to actually pursue my photography career started... uh late 08.

kAy:Who or what influenced you to become a photographer?
st0kes ;- My 1st photography teacher, Ms Ek Waller... I will not forget that lady, she inspired me to "break the rules of photography" by creating create my own vision. She introduced me to " constructive criticism" smh. Putting me in the hot seat, displaying my photos and allowing the class to seriously thrash my work, as i sit and just listen to my "peers" point out my flaws...

kAy:Do you believe in the expression ' A picture is worth 1,000 words " ? ( if yes, why do you believe this is true)?
st0kes ;- absolutely. A photograph is like a puzzle, your trying to piece the situation together and complete the story. And i believe thats what any photographer would want you to do, stare at the photo until you think you know what's going down. Like for instance this photographer that goes by "boogie" is a great example... His photos will leave you in awe, every photo is just a classic in my opinion. I truly admire his work.

kAy:Do you have a favorite photograph?
st0kes ; something about this photo. - photographer : Boogie

kAy:Do you think that society would be different if photography was never invented?
st0kes ;- hell yeah shit would be different, Models would be out of work lol!.

kAy:What makes a good photographer in your opinion?
st0kes ;- their eye... you HAVE to have the "eye for photography".. i mean anyone can buy an SLR camera now a days smh.

kAy:Do you prefer using film cameras over digital?
st0kes ;- digital, but I told myself i will master the art of film photography.. the exposure and composition make the photos have this allure that words can't describe.

kAy:What motivates you to do what you do?
st0kes ;- my strong will to bring back an lost art. When my time comes, my photography will still be here.. All the stories i've captured, photos of these great upcoming artist, events i've done, etc.. I just want the world to see my perspective, and my photography is my vision expressed to the world.

kAy:Where can a person of intreats find your work / reach you?
st0kes ;- my site is under construction, so for now my flickr account is VERY active or my posts on LAstereo . To reach me? shit anyone can come holla at me when i'm work (niketown los angeles), rolling thru the streets of los angeles, at any function lol, or you can just email ya boy

Aroc & Blaze interview
Sunday, January 3, 2010

LA talent , comes in so many different shapes and forms & in this case , its share between two young men ; who with releasing two mixtapes last year alone , are showing that they have what it takes to write , record and produce MUSIC . I chose to do an online interview with Aroc & Blaze , solely because at this present time , they have a hot mixtape out.

Q: State your ( real ) name .
Derrius Logan Anthony-Casey & Aaron Holland .

Q: When did first 'become' an artist .
While Derrius lets it be known that since high school he always wanted to do music, but it was RnB ... he has slowly came over to rap & actually loves to do both ; Aaron's been rapping since he was 14 but admits about 2 years ago is when he started taking it serious enough to call his self a 'artist' . Aaron says he does not recall the exact day , but he does remember telling himself ' this is what i want to do '

Q:Where, Why and How did you come up with your stage name?
" I got my name Bläzé from my friends all telling me how much I act like my big bro Justin Walker aka Blaze, we were at one of my friends houses joking around n that's what stuck" said Blaze , Aaron adds that Justin Walker ( there manager / big bro ) actually started calling him ' Ar0c' about 4 years ago , & it stuck.

Q:Are you a member of a music organization (label) , if so name?
The group is from a music team know as 'UFO' or Unidentified Fresh Objects and signed to Swesh Management . But they let it be known , they are still look'n for that major deal in 'O ten' .

Q:Who are your musical influences?
While Aroc would say R.Les , Pharell , Timbo and Swizzy right off the bat because they are all producers that are artist as well & thats always what he wants to do ( produce and record on his own tracks ) , he also adds Jay-z , Luda , Busta and Fabolous to the list . . Him and Blaze seem to agree that Drake & Wayne are up there in rank too . Blaze adds, that his musical influences are anybody molding the game RIGHT now , and accredits the Black Eyed Peas and Coldplay and in older music , Stevie Wonder.

Q:Who are your favorite groups? cd ?
Blaze & Aroc actually agree Outkast & Clipse but differ on the third spot ; [ LOL ] Aroc gives it to The Neptunes while Blaze hands it to Gnarles Barkley . These two are truly in-sink with one another because for there top three cd's they again agreed , Kanye West ' Graduation' . Blaze noted Stevie Wonder - Talking Book [ my personal fav ] & Andre 3000 - The Love Below while Aroc gave it up too 50cent - Get Rich Or Die Try'n [ my personal fav ] & Lil Wayne - The Carter II .

Q:I take it your write your own music , but what gives you the inspiration ?
Blaze states for the record ' I write all my own music ! ' LOL ; and tells that his inspiration comes from LIFE, each song comes from something 'we' have been through , thought about , or aspire to do .. or just how the beat makes ' us' feel . While Aroc openly states , he really doesn't know where he gets it all from .. that often he just ' hears the track & does him ' that whatever comes out .. if its dope ; he just runs with it

Q:What image do you think your music conveys ?
" All our music can do is show who we are, what we think about, & what we like to do. We gotta stay true to us & the music. " - Blaze ,
"I think our music conveys a image that anybody can relate to because
we make sure we hit almost every genre of music " - Aroc

Q: What do you want from your fans ?
Aroc & Blaze both agree that they just want ' SUPPORT ' , Aroc adds that he isn't saying they don't , but he wants the fans too keep it up .

Q: What are your immediate music career goals?
Blaze notes that they are now just working on perfecting their craft . . by writing & performing . Aroc's states a short term goal of his is to start performing ( more ) ; and getting a single in rotation on the radio.

Q:What has been your biggest challenge has a unsigned artist?
Aroc says staying focused and making sure they have consistent good music coming out , while Blaze said , getting out there .

Q:What do you want to accomplish with your music this year (2010) ?
In 2010 I plan on getting to be the best artists/performer I can be - Blaze ; I'm tryna have our music national not just in LA but big enough to
where people in New York know who we are, and I'm sure without he right moves it can happen - Aroc

Q:Out of all the songs you have recorded , what is your favorite ? , what is your least favorite?
While Aroc found this question to be the hardest , He finally came around to say ' Giving You All I Got ' off their ' Never Felt Better Mixtape ; while Blaze notes that 'Isolation' off the same mixtape because it shows their abilities ' content ' wise ! .. AGAIN these two are in-sink ; they more without a doubt named ' Unstoppable ' off their first mixture ' Get Well Soon' has their least favorite.

Q: Could you briefly describe your music- making process .
" I write all the time ... Seperate lines that I have on stash or verses saved for whenever. But when I hear a beat Ima do I always start with nothing and see where the beats gunna take me before I use anything else. " - Blaze && Aroc says " Well 9 times outta 10 I make the beat that usually take me no longer
then 30 mins and depend'n on how much we feel'n the track is how fast it gets done wit us write'n to it and lay'n our verses down. We also
engineer our own music so mostly everything you hear is done from scratch directly from our own works. "

Q:Do you have any upcoming shows ?
As of now we do have shows in the works that will be solidified soon.

Q:How can fans to be gain access to your music ?
